Thunderbolt

Like I said, it's going to take some time to get back into the routine of writing. Let's consider this first week a warm up.

Yesterday was Julie's birthday and I spent the evening out to dinner with Beth who is in town for a convention. Hopefully Jules and I will get away for a little bit this weekend to have dinner together.

I ran hard yesterday, the first time I've really pushed myself in training this go around. Man did I feel it in my lower back this morning. Then again, it could be some other stress that I'm surprising. I'm no doctor.

I've been working on a 4/1 run walk ration, for any of you who are keeping track. I'm going to stick with that this year. I believe that switching my pattern of running effected my performance in the Honolulu race.

Sophie had her Kindergarten assessment this morning. She did great. I can't believe she's going to in kindergarten. Wasn't she just a little baby? Seems like eons ago. And Jake is growing up fast. The little nut can say his name, now (though he generally shouts it. "JACOOOB!!" His health has been good these past few months.

However, a throat culture earlier this year found psedomonas, a NASTY bacteria and he has been on a new medicine called Tobramycin (Tobi). He should run the course of his dosage while we're in Ohio in a couple of weeks. I pray that the Tobi has cleared his throat up. As it stands now, he is on 4 different breathing medicines that take 5 breathing treatments each day, in addition to his regular orals. He had a GI checkup on Monday and he gained 3 pounds! That's pretty exciting. For those of you who have children, 3 pounds may sound like nothing. For us, that's awesome.

Okay, I'm struggling to keep up here. I really feel like I'm just throwing things at the screen, hoping they'll stick. That's all for now. I'll do my best to keep on top of my entries. I promise.

Basement Songs: "Golden Gates" by John Cougar Mellencamp

I’m not sure when my brother, Budd, bought his copy of John (then) Cougar Mellencamp’s “Uh Huh”. The cassette just showed up in the basement on summer, years after its release. Like most of America, I was a big fan of “Pink Houses”, and I was thrilled that now had copies of his other big hits from that album, “Crumblin’ Down” and “The Authority Song.” At this point in his career, Mellencamp was ready to establish himself as a legitimate artist, hence the use of his real name (the record label wouldn’t allow him to ditch the “Cougar” until years later for fear record buyers may get confused….huh?) In addition, there was the radio staple (at least in Cleveland), “Play Guitar”, on side 2, which borrowed heavily from Them’s “Gloria” (Mellencamp often slipped the “G-L-O-R-I-A”’s into his concerts during that number). When I was 17, I worked at American Video, a small business housed in the Great Northern shopping strip. My time there was short, as was American Video’s lifespan. The days of the mom-and-pop video stores were cycling out. Blockbuster had just opened in my hometown and within a couple years, American Video, as well as the store where I first fell in love with movies, First Run Video, would shutter their doors. What I loved about these indie video stores was the variety of choices and the limited number of copies of movies each store had. Come in looking for Back to the Future and it’s already rented? You strolled the aisles until you found something similar like Innerspace , or something completely different, like And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python’s first movie.
